FAQ

Sizing & Finding the Right Kit

How do I know which repair kit fits my speakers?

Don't guess! Speaker sizes (like 8-inch or 10-inch) are just nominal descriptions and vary wildly between manufacturing brands. To find the perfect fit, you must measure your original speaker component or match the exact dimensions listed on our product pages. If you are unsure, drop us a message with your speaker's make and model number before ordering—we are happy to check our database for you.

How do I measure my speaker for a new foam surround?

To get an accurate match, use a ruler or calliper to measure in millimetres (mm) across these four critical points:

  • Outer Diameter (A): The absolute outside edge of the foam surround.
  • Outer Roll Diameter (B): The measurement across the outer edge of the raised "hump" (roll).
  • Inner Roll Diameter (C): The measurement across the inner edge where the raised roll meets the flat inner lip.
  • Inner Diameter (D): The absolute inside edge of the surround lip that glues to the speaker cone.

What is the difference between a "flat" edge and an "angled" edge cone?

  • Flat Edge: The outer perimeter of your speaker cone is completely flat/horizontal where the inner lip of the surround glues down.
  • Angled/Attached Edge: The speaker cone slopes or angles downward toward the center. This requires an angled-rim surround to prevent the suspension from buckling during playback.

Installation & Technical Advice

I just opened my package and there is only one foam surround inside. Help!

Don't worry, your order is complete! Our premium foam surrounds are precision-nested tightly together for protection during transit. If you look closely at the edges and gently peel them apart, you will find your full pair of matching surrounds.

What is the best way to clean the old glue off my speaker frame?

Preparation is everything. Dab Isopropyl Alcohol (rubbing alcohol) onto the old, degraded foam residue on the metal basket and the edge of the cone. Let it sit for a few minutes to soften the old factory adhesive, then carefully scrape it bare using a safety razor or our non-scratch plastic scrapers. The surfaces must be 100% clean and dry before applying new glue.

Do I need to remove the dust cap and shim the voice coil?

For the vast majority of standard home audio hi-fi speakers, you do not need to cut off the dust cap or use plastic shims. You can easily center the cone by hand. Gently press the cone up and down evenly as the outer frame glue is tacking up; if you don't hear or feel any scratching, the voice coil is perfectly centered. Shimming is typically only required for heavy-duty subwoofers or pro-audio PA drivers.

How long does the speaker adhesive take to dry?

Our specialized speaker repair glue gives you about 5–10 minutes of working time to perfectly adjust the alignment before it tacks up. Once installed, we strictly recommend letting the adhesive cure for at least 24 hours before mounting the speaker back into the cabinet and applying audio power.
